About the Event

imgINDIE WED IS AN EVENT

Indie Wed is THE alternative to traditional wedding expos. For those in the midst of wedding planning, Indie Wed offers a one-stop shop for all the best wedding artisans and professionals around the country. Indie Wed is the longest running independent wedding show in the U.S.

So what exactly does “Indie Wed” mean? Not only is our focus on promoting and supporting small, independent (indie) businesses, but also those couples with an independent spirit. For some that may mean a full-blown unconventional fete while others may simply want to incorporate a few handmade items from local artisans.

Indie Wed is not just a show but also a market where many of the artists will be selling their wares on the spot

The main goal of Indie Wed has always been to provide support for small and independent businesses. It is our commitment to those business owners that informs the majority of our decisions.

Unlike traditional wedding expos, which allow anyone to participate as long as they can afford the exorbitant booth fees, Indie Wed shows are curated. Vendors must first apply to participate. Next, only a limited number of vendors are selected per category to ensure that no particular area is oversaturated (for the benefit of the vendors and attendees). Finally, in order to create a more accessible marketing platform for small businesses, costs are kept intentionally affordable.

In 2009, stationer Kelly Maron Horvath was desperate to find couples to work with that fit her more quirky and whimsical style. She knew a stale commercial wedding expo would just not cut it. Since Kelly could not find the perfect place to showcase her unique goods, she decided to create one. As a former high school teacher, she had no problem taking the lead to coordinate something amazing.

Kelly started organizing what she assumed would be a small show with a few dozen vendors and a couple hundred people or so (if she were lucky!) but by the time she was done, the first Indie Wed (held in Chicago in January of 2010) had nearly 60 vendors with close to 1200 attendees. It was clear that couples were craving something other than the typical cookie-cutter event and thus, Indie Wed was born!

Key Numbers

IW-STATS-2

The average Indie Wed attendee is a young, sophisticated couple looking for unique and personalized elements for their event. They seek to support small businesses and are willing to invest financially in the right vendor. Quality and craftsmanship are more important to them than overall cost.
